I'm so excited about this shot! I've had this prop for some time now, but didn't have a baby sleepy enough to put into it. Doesn't he look so comfy and cozy? What an adorable boy, just one week old, all tiny and all curled up.

And his mommy is so awesome and scheduled his first session almost two months in advance. And, she even brought some really awesome hats for him to wear. Love the little elf hat.

Girls On The Run Northwest Illinois 5K June 2011

I remember hearing that there are no selfless acts, because even when we give of ourselves 100%, we are rewarded with good feelings. And because of that good feeling, it's not really a selfless act. That's how I feel about donating my time and talent to Girls On The Run of Northwest Illinois. For the past three years, I've volunteered to photograph the 5K race, and every time, I get a gooey feeling in my stomach when I see the excitement and anticipation on the girls faces as they get ready for the race. I have chills when I hear Laurie Dayon's pre-race pep talk. And I my eyes well up with tears when I see the girls finish with the roaring support of fans, and hugs and high fives from their running buddies. In that moment, I know they are having a mountain top experience that changes how they see themselves and makes them believe that anything is possible. I'm so proud of them. And I'm so proud to see so many of my friends and clients cross the line, too. So, congratulations to all you girls!

This year was particularly inspiring, as the race has grown so large that the fans along the finish line were staking out seats early like it was a Disney Parade. The pre-race lineup was too big to even get in a single shot. And, Laurie's pre-race pep talk was heard from high in the sky in a bucket truck! (Go Laurie!!!!) And I have to say that the entire GOTR crew did an amazing job to keep everything running smoothly.

I'm seriously the worst blogger when I can't even post really awesome stuff on my blog in a timely fashion. But, hey, here it is! In May, the American Motorcyclist Association hired me to shoot Rebecca and her bikes in her garage for the July issue. Turns out, they really liked the images (and Rebecca), because we ended up getting the cover! There's also almost a full page image inside the magazine. How cool is that?

I am obsessed with the nest in our yard. I'll write more later, but wanted to share this one. Thanks to my 200mm lens, I get to "see" these little ones up close. I'd love to set up my camera on a tripod with a remote trigger and wait for mama bird to feed them. Not sure I'm that obsessed, however. Check back later, and maybe I'll post some from a few days ago when they were tiny little things and not even poking out of the nest.

I love when I get to work with really cool people for a really cool assignment. Last week, I did a shoot for the American Motorcyclist Association. The American Motorcyclist Magazine is doing a piece about Rebecca, who doesn't own a car and uses her bikes and other forms of public transportation to get around. I met her last Monday at her amazing garage in Evanston. It had tons of character, inside and out. And, I could go on about how awesome Rebecca is, how she came alive when she was talking about things she's passionate about (her bikes and her business). You can check out her blog here. And just what a cool person she is. But, if I did all that, I'd probably embarrass her. (Hi Rebecca! You rock! I hope you like these.) Being around people like that is so cool, because some of their excitement for life can't help but rub off on you. And that's one really cool thing about this job.

Taste of Summer Today {Cary Photograher}

My little man wanted to make lemon squares yesterday, so how could I resist? As he insisted on using the hand-held mixer by himself, I was impressed with his domestic interest. But, then I realized it probably had more to do with dessert and power tools than a genuine interest in cooking. Oh well, I'll take it. Whatever his motivation, the time together was fun and the end result was delicious.

Mmmmm. Lemon squares. Sweet and refreshing. Light and Tangy. Flaky and moist. Hungry yet? Maybe I'll share some. Maybe. Depends how nice you are.

Happy New Year to everyone! It's been a busy 2010, and I'm looking forward to a great 2011. Over the holidays, I took some time to go back to a session in July of my own kids. I had a few printed for a gallery wrapped canvas display, but didn't really have the time to enjoy each and every shot until now. Here are a few funny faces to warm up this chilly Friday.

I had some fun giving them a softer, more vintage look, which I think really suits the images. My favorites are the first and the last. The first one makes me laugh, and the last one just melts my heart. My sweet baby boy, no longer a baby, not yet a man, but all mine.

I love when I get to do different stuff. This awesome family is always up for something unique. Last year we hit downtown Arlington Heights. This year, we stayed by their house. In fact, their house ended up being the perfect backdrop. I'm so envious of their awesome new addition, complete with a swimming pool. I've been thinking about training for a triathlon, but the swimming part is holding me back. If our house had this, there would be no excuses.

She was smart enough to know that the purple belt that went with her dress was not the "karate belt" I tried to sell it as. She loves to pose, in a very princess and dramatic almost disco kind of way. And she was a trooper when her boots kept getting stuck in the tree, and as she fell forward, I rescued her from falling on the ground. And she loves suckers that turn into gum (aka blow pops). She's only 2 days older than my son, and her mom and I compared back-pain and other pregnancy related grievances before they were born. And many years before that we shared boyfriend-related grievances. Thankfully, we're not married to those same silly college boys. We found better ones to marry. Time sure flies, but I do think that things keep getting better.

Last Bit of Summer {Chicago Kids Photographer}

It's kind of funny, because this session was two weeks ago, and we were joking that we were "faking" summer. These adorable little girls were bundled up in coats when the weren't in front of my lens. But, after last weekend, you would think that summer is still here. We always get that last warm weekend in October.

It was a real treat to photograph these girls. They are the nicest girls, and I had fun playing "gimme five" in between takes. They were troopers in the cold, and are just good kids. Sweet, kind, respectful, loving. A real joy. And it was a treat to work at this location. I love water and beaches. And it was even prettier as the sun was setting. I think I'm going to have to take my own kids here for a session next summer.

Innocent wisdom

Today, my daughter inspired me. We all believed, at one time, that we could save the world. Where do we, as grown-ups, lose sight that we can make a difference? We can change the our lives, our community, even the world.

I believe we all have good ideas and can make a difference. But most of the time, we find excuses why it won't work even before we start trying. We give ourselves reasons to not even try. Just think of all the lost opportunities because we don't try. All it takes is an idea, a belief we can do it, and the action to make it happen.

Here's a challenge for you all. Pick one thing you've been wanting to try. One thing that's been eating at you, but you just haven't done it. Maybe it's to take guitar lessons. Join a book club. Better yet, start a book club. Volunteer at an animal shelter. Get involved in local politics. Donate your time/talent in a big way to someone who could use some help. Reach out to an individual who needs help. Volunteer at the food pantry. Start exercising. Sign up for a triathlon.

Whatever it is, pick it. Write it down. And take action. Today. Do it. And tell me what it is and what action you took. Yes, I'm holding you accountable. If

I get a huge response, I might even toss out a free photo session to the idea I like best. Action counts. Now, think hard, and act. Be inspired. Show me your inspiration. Put your foot to the floor and go.

Here's a little personal history. I know this post isn't about me; it's about an awesome organization and an awesome group of girls. But bear with me. About a year ago, I started exercising. I didn't set out to become a runner, because that was crazy talk. Totally unrealistic. So when I was fit enough to run for 3 miles, I was so proud. Beyond proud, actually. Completing a race is not just a physical accomplishment. Yes, it does require getting into shape and building muscles and endurance. But, really, it's a mental accomplishment. It requires hard work, effort, perseverance, discipline, confidence, the power to push yourself, and strength.

For me, one year ago, in my 30's, that was a huge accomplishment. I only wish I could have done it when I was younger. And that's why I'm so proud of these girls. Every one of them. That's why I get chills when Laurie gives her pep talk. It's not just about running. It's about being a strong person, and being confident and believing in yourself. And that's why I get tears in my eyes when I'm at the finish line. Because these girls have accomplished something really huge. And hopefully they have learned that the best accomplishments require work, most times, a lot of it. But, it's worth doing. And they're worth it. GOOOOOO GIRRRLLSSSS!!!!

The saying about kids growing up way to fast applies to other people's kids, too. I can't believe that my niece is one. And, if I can be a bragging aunt, she keeps getting cuter and cuter. She's my first niece, and I just melt when I see her. Here are some cute ones of her. Watching her eat the cake was so fun. Of course, having been at her birthday party, I knew that she was going to enjoy the experience. A lot. Some kids are really hesitant, not liking the texture of the frosting. Oh no, my niece knew exactly what to do. She ate and ate and ate. And was eating it by the fistfuls. Literally. The shot below was taken early on, so it doesn't show the damage.

Cary-Grove Class of 2011 - Sarah {Chicago Senior Photographer}

I'm so excited to introduce to you Sarah. She is a Class of 2011 Senior Rep for Cary-Grove High School. I was lucky enough to photograph her about a year ago for a commercial project, and she was so adorable, stylish, and fun. So I was ecstatic when she applied to be a rep this year. :) This time, we got to shoot just for her. And, we had a great time in the studio, and then had a blast going outside. We even got "busted" by the local forest preserve patrol. Apparently, it's new that you need a permit to photograph in the conservation districts. Good thing they let me take Sarah's mug shot photo after they arrested her. Just kidding! Just to clarify, the officer was very nice, and politely informed us of the new rules. Then we hit the tracks to get some shots with a more urban feel. She's such a natural, and we had so much fun together that we stopped the session only because the sun went down. Actually, we kept going until past sunset, pushing the limits on my camera. Thank goodness for my awesome camera that almost shoots in the dark.

Today, my kiddos were on the payroll. I paid them real money to help with cleaning out stuff around the house. In the armoire in our bedroom, I found a bunch of markers and a coloring book. My son's job was to test the markers and toss the dried out ones. He sat down on the carpet to complete the job. Rethinking that, I suggested he test the markers on the bathroom floor. That's exactly what I got.

My baby turned seven today. Yesterday, while I was grilling our dinner, she was running around outside and then laid down and was looking up at the sky, just like this. Of course, like a good mom (ahem and photographer) I grabbed the camera. I wonder what she was thinking about as she looked up at the sky. Maybe it was the cloud types that she's studying in school. Maybe she was thinking of the presents she wants for her birthday. Maybe she was thinking of how her sweet brother can seem so annoying. Whatever it is, it's a priceless moment. Here she is. My baby. On her last day as a six year old.

These aren't your typical formal business suit on a gray blackground. Of course, I can do those well, but I always love getting to do something a little more fresh and fun. I had a great time with Solstice Consulting. They were all so smart and so fun. Spending a few hours with them kind of made me want to get back to my engineering roots so I could be part of a team like that.

Solstice's new website will be launching at the end of the month, and I think it's great that they will show off their best resources... their talented people.

My daughter dressed herself this morning. And, yes, the socks are designed to be unmatched. I love when I find a fun place to get unique things and I just want to share. The store is called Little Miss Matched, and they have the cutest mismatched stuff. You buy socks in sets of three. None of them are the same, but they all go together. So, the problem of losing one sock in a pair is never going to happen. Hurray for that!

The socks came on Saturday along with some mismatched flip flops (fun!), and my daughter picked out the shorts and the shoes. I think she's got a future in fashion. And I'm proud of her for expressing herself.

I can't wait to actually pair these socks with a bright pettiskirt, a fun hat, and a jean jacket. Sooooo cool!!!!

Hey everyone! Here's something brand new to shout out about. Here is my first ever senior rep program, and it's going to be really cool! Really. I mean, what could be cooler than the chance to get amazing senior photos that are as unique as you are, have a blast while you're doing it, and get to earn cool stuff and cash. Yes, cash. Like real dollar bills that you can take to Hollister or Abercrombie to get that new outfit that you've been wanting. So, are you ready? I know I am!

Here's the scoop. I'm looking for a few outstanding local seniors who will represent my business for next year. What am I looking for? Someone who is influential in their school, liked by your peers and your teachers, has a great attitude, is active in extra-curricular activities, is a good role model, and most importantly - MUST LOVE MY WORK. Little ones always do the cutest things. It's fun to see how a one year old's personality has developed. And sometimes, we're lucky enough to capture a spontaneous moment like this one below on film... or CF card. This little one year old was the cutest thing. And while she didn't sit there and smile perfectly, which they NEVER do, we got a ton of adorable images of her being her sweet self.

Not your average team photos {Chicago childrens photographer}

I won't say it was fate, but it was a very unique set of circumstances that introduced me to Premier Poms Experience in Barrington, IL. It was good timing, a little luck, and some really good people. And, I'm so thrilled to get to know this awesome organization. What makes them awesome? They are a not-for-profit poms team, whose mission is caring and competition. How cool is that? The partners started the organization after some not so good experiences with coaching that was, well, not so positive. Coaching is supposed to make people better right? And it has to be done well, especially if you're coaching young girls who are trying to develop their identities and self-confidence. And, after spending two practices with these girls, Val and I were wow'd by how much they do truly care about each girl. It was so awesome to experience. And, it was so much fun to get to know these girls during their photo shoots. Each of them was incredible.

Here are a few of the images... and I can't even say these are my favorites, because there were truly so many great ones! And, thank you, to the partners, the coaches, the girls, and their parents! I'll look forward to seeing you all next year!

Oh, and I just have to add this. We did the photos at the Lake Barrington Field House, which is where the girls practice. Wow. That place is sooo huge and so cool!

Eat the fur

I admit it. I was skeptical at first when my very smart and very trustworthy trainer told me to eat the skin on a kiwi. I thought, sure, it might be healthy, but I imagined it nearly impossible to bite through. Then, I'd have to struggle to get it down to my stomach, as it scratched and tickled on the way down.

But, anything is worth a try. And, kiwis are so healthy and it's such a pain to peel the skin. So, what the heck, I took a bite, skin and all. And I was surprised. Really surprised. I didn't even taste the fur. The experience reminded me of eating a peach, which is entirely delish.

My kids even tried, and loved it. Oh, and that Mikey kid from the Life cereal ads of my generation eats anything compared to my daughter. Who, by the way, won't eat Life cereal.

So, here's the actual conversation following eating something that seemed gross, but wasn't:

A: Mommy, hurry! Now can I have some peanut butter and toast?
Me: Why?
A: Because I want to try something else I don't like.

Kids. If only they came with a secret decoder ring. But, at least we have this healthy snack. And, stay tuned. We're doing things differently in the nutrition front.

Lost Tooth - Chicago Childrens Photographer

My baby came home from first grade on Friday with a big smile on her face, and a hole in her smile. She lost her third tooth, but this was the one that drastically changed her smile. It was the top one. She was so proud and so excited, and eagerly ran to my studio so I could take some photos of her new look.

I don't know if any other moms feel this way, but I was kind of thankful that she started losing her teeth on the later side. Not because it grossed me out, which surprisingly, it doesn't. But, because it's another milestone reached that means that my baby is growing up. Thankfully, her excitement and pride washed away any kind of sadness that I felt about her never looking the same again with those perfect little baby teeth. Seems like yesterday that I thought how huge it was when it cut it's way through her gums for the first time - changing her smile forever. Now, here we are. Time flies.

The Christmas cards have officially started to arrive in our mailbox, and I LOVE it. I especially love seeing the ones with photos to see how people and kids have changed.

This is just a friendly reminder that it's not too late to order holiday cards from your session this year. Or, if you don't want to do a card through me, you're welcome to purchase a digital file (which includes copyright license) from your session so you can print as many as you want.

Please be aware that it is illegal to scan prints and make your own copies. I don't want to be the copyright police, but I also know that a lot of people really don't understand the copyright laws. So here's my public service announcement on the topic. ;) In essence, when you purchase a photograph from any professional photographer, you purchase the single photograph and the right to display it in your home, office, etc. It does not give you the right to reproduce it in any way. I know lots of people do this, and some do so without knowing that it is wrong. Illegal, actually. And it's punishable by law with fines up to $150,000.

If you do want to make multiple copies, please let me know, and I'd be happy to sell you a digital file that allows you to do so with better quality, too. In doing so, you can keep a clear conscience and be a good role model for your kids when you teach them that stealing is wrong.

A photographer's son

The week before Thanksgiving, I was hired to photograph over a dozen doctors for public service announcements (on the radio) and posters for them to hang in their studio. It was a really fun job. I did it over two nights at local recording studios and really fun people to spend the evening working with. So, leading up to and following the events, there was a lot of talk about headshots in our house.

Yesterday, we are at our pediatrician's office for H1N1 vaccines, and Grant says "Mommy, I don't like headshots very much". It took a minute to figure out where that came from. Then it clicked. Funny. Kids say the cutest things.

Has it really been so long since I've posted on my blog? I guess that's because I've been crazy busy with sessions, editing, and ordering. Busy is good, but I am looking forward to the slower months so I can just be a mom myself.

I could write paragraphs upon paragraphs about the wonderfulness of yesterday. Everything was amazing. It was truly an honor to photograph the wedding of a dear friend of mine, Dawn Marie. DM (as she's known) is an amazing person. She's as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside. She's funny and smart, and can grab the attention of room full of people and keep them entertained and engaged for hours upon hours. Good thing she's a facilitator for Dale Carnegie Training!!! But, most importantly, she's truly a good, good person. Kind, generous, and caring. She's kind of person who drops a card in the mail just because. And when you open the card, it's filled with beautiful, bright words. The meaning of the words are bright and beautiful, but they're also visually bright and beautiful - carefully written and created with bright and vivid markers and pens. DM- I hope I'm not embarrassing you!

So, when she she told me a few months back that she was getting married to Franco, I was so incredibly excited for her! He's the perfect match for her. And the highlight of the day was the ceremony, standing on the rocks overlooking Lake Michigan. With the warm sun on our shoulders, and warm feelings in our hearts, DM and Franco shared their promises for their life to come in a way that was, well, totally them. Perfect.

This is just a small collection of moments and details of the day.

First Day of School

Wow. A first grader. That's my baby. Well, at least she was a baby. Now she's reading, skipping rope, and doing those hand slapping and clapping games that little girls do... you know, the ones that are the grown-up version of patty-cake. I say every year how time flies. And it only seems to go faster. So, I apologize for saying it here. And, I'm sure I'll be saying it next year. But, all parents feel the same way.

Today, she lined up with her old friends from her kindergarten class and the other kids who will be new friends by the end of today. Together, they walked into the school, put their backpacks in their locker, and started their year. It made me proud.

When I shop, I'm always thinking of what I can pull together for photos of the kids together. And, I admit, it's hard! Even stores that have both boys and girls clothing never coordinate their lines. Girls have bright colors, boys have muted tones. So, here's what I pulled together today. It's really a sneak peek, because I just placed my order today from Mini Boden. As of now, this is one option that my kids will be wearing for some fall photos. While I ordered the bunny shirt that's shown below, I may opt for a solid blue shirt for the photo session. I'll also layer my son in a blue shirt as well. So, there you go - coordinating outfits that aren't too matchy-matchy.

And, if I were doing a family shoot, I'd throw my husband in a casual blue button down and some khaki cargos, and I'd wear jeans and a sylish brown jacket or sweater with cropped sleeves (you know the kind?) and some a pink long sleeved shirt. I haven't shopped for that.... yet. :)

Do you ever have a million things that must be done, and yet, you just can't resist doing something that doesn't quite qualify as a "must do". I'm having a moment like that right now. There is laundry to be done, stuff to organize, outfits to pick out, suitcases to pack. But, I'd rather post some of these images. Just a heads up that the studio will be closed during the time that I'll be laying on a beach and doing absolutely nothing. ;) I've been told by my travel agent that there is wi-fi at the resort... but I've also been told by my husband that we won't be using it (except to check in on the kids, who are staying home with grandparents).

An important message

Most of the time I get to shoot the happy moments of love, life, and relationships. But, occasionally I get called upon to create images of a different kind.

In June, the American Motorcyclist Association contacted me to shoot some images for an article in their August magazine. Many of you will remember the story recently about the motorcylist, Anita Zaffke, who was killed when a driver failed to stop at a stoplight because she was painting her nails. It was a tragic story. But, it's not just a story for Greg Zaffke, who is Anita Zaffke's son. He has to deal with the very personal and wasteful loss of his mother every day.

There's a lesson to be learned here. And, Greg has turned his grief into something productive in order to brings awareness to a problem in our multi-task focused world. He paints the nails on his right hand black as a statement and reminder of his mother. Black Nail Brigade is an organization that he's created to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving, and to work for legislation that holds negligent drivers accountable.

That's me. I'll admit it and take full responsibility that I haven't posted anything for a while. It's not that there isn't good stuff to post. The truth is that there's too much to post, and just not enough time. So, I put my nose to the grindstone and try to get the editing done. Lots of sessions. Lots of great and fun sessions. Lots of really fun people. Lots of awesome images. But... not enough time to post them at the moment. So keep checking back. :)

PS. The studio will be closed from August 3rd - August 11th. And this vacation, I'm not taking my work with me. Heck. There probably won't even be internet. Is that even possible these days? Anyway, because of this, turnaround times on orders and proofs will be slightly longer than usual.

I'm so proud of the girls who finished their participation in the program with a 5K. Even though I donated my time and talent to be there, I feel like I was given so much in return. I had chills as they started the race, and tears of joy for them as they finished. I can't wait until my daughter can be a part of this great organization.

When I photograph little ones who are as cute and as happy as this little guy was, I really know that I have the best job there is. This little guy was so happy and was so fun to photograph. His dad brought this awesome glove and ball. Perfectly used, but not too grimy. His dad kept hiding the ball in the glove so little "R" would have to dig and hunt a bit to find it. Worked like a charm. We got so many great shots like this.

I have to tell everyone that I had the BEST time. No kidding. Renee and Tim, you guys are so cute together and so fun to be around. Even though we just met, I felt like we'd been friends for years. I hope you love these as much as I do. I'm so excited about how they turned out.

Tim, here's your bridge shot. I've never heard anyone so passionate about beams and rivets... It was really interesting to hear about them and to think back to the structures classes I took in college.

We went out recently for a session and got some amazing images. We had so much fun. You know you're having fun when you look at the clock and go "whoa... it's already this late?" 365 Project

It's time that I shoot for myself again. I spend so much time photographing my beautiful and wonderful clients, and I'm forever grateful to share my passion with my clients. And, still, I find that my camera is packed away, or somehow not accessible for the daily moments in my own life that are so sweet. So I've started a project for myself. For my family. Every day, for one year, I'll take one photo. I'll capture their goofy expressions, the silly stuff, and the quickly passing days. I will have them to look back on when I'm old and in a nursing home. My kids can pass them down for generations (um, if I print them). No, I mean, when I print them. Photos on disk are dangerous. They are just bits and bytes. Only a print is there to be valued. Okay, off that tangent... When I print them. My kids will have them to pass on to their kids. This project is about my family. It's about my kids. It's about the people who I love the most in this entire world. It's about focusing on what matters. ;)

I'm posting all of them in a folder on facebook... go ahead and "friend" me if you want to see them all. :) Here are just a few from the first week.

Oh, and the added bonus... it's sparking my creativity, forcing me to try new things, and I'm learning to shoot outside my comfort zone. All of these will make me a better and more creative photographer.

Doing a happy dance!

I go in spurts in entering contests. I forget to enter. Or, I'm too busy to enter. Or something else. And then I remember. So, in the past month, I've entered a few images, and gotten some fun recognition.

Yesterday, I received an email telling me that "A Dancer's Shoes" received 2nd place in betterphoto.com's monthly contest. There were almost 20,000 entries in all the categories, and only 10 selected for the 2nd place in the People category. It's quite an honor.

This little guy had so many rolls and the softest skin. He's a hungry little fellow, too. He wanted to eat a few times during our session. But, you have to eat a lot if you want to be this cute. I'm on a health kick. Maybe it's the fact that spring is upon us, and that means short sleeves, shorts, and, um, swim suits. So instead of firing up the grill for a good burger this weekend, we fired it up for a portabello mushroom. I brushed it with a bit of italian dressing, and topped it with a slice of provolone and roasted red pepper. With the bun grilled just a bit, it was perfect. MMmmmmm. Good.

New Background

Spring is in the air, and I'm feeling motivated, refreshed, and ultra creative! I know lots of people love the white background, but here's a fun alternative. It's a little fresh, a little traditional, very distinctive, so it's perfect. This would be awesome for high school seniors, a family session, maternity, or newborns. Depending on how I light it, I can make the swirls more subtle or dramatic.

Green Tree Industries - Part 2

As promised, here are a few more from the commercial shoot with Green Tree Industries. The concept was to show how the reusable shopping bags can be used for more than just groceries. We came up with a bunch of ideas: going to the gym, dance class, the beach, on a picnic, to gymnastics, to sports, to the pool, etc. We also wanted to show how they could be used for retail shopping as well. We had a lot of fun filling the bags and making them look good.

As I'm filling the bag with the workout stuff (yoga mat and towel), I'm trying to think of what else could go in there. I thought... water bottle! And as I was packing the bottle I happened to be drinking from, I was stopped for good reason. The whole point of these bags is being green, and putting a non-reusable bottle in there isn't sending the right message. Of course, that makes perfect sense! I had to laugh about my own ignorance in the moment. Though I must admit, I do try to avoid the plastic bottles... but there is a time and place for them. For example, I have water available for clients to drink during a session. Just a little extra something. And, of course, the reusable plastic bottle that I did buy a while back had to be thrown out because of the whole BPA thing. So... I guess it's time to go shopping for a new reusable water bottle! In the name of going green.

So, back to the bags... spending all day shooting the uses for these bags gave me a kick start. I threw a few in my car so they're there when I go shopping. And, I used one to take the kids stuff to swim lessons on Monday and gymnastics on Wednesday. And, they're great for hauling the snow pants, boots, etc. to and from school. But, hopefully, we won't be doing that until next winter!

Going Green with Green Tree Industries

It's something that I've been trying to be better at. Recycling is a given; we do that with ease. I keep our thermostat low. We traded out most of our bulbs for the compact fluorescent. So, when I had the chance to photograph these really nice Green Totes, I was ecstatic! Here's one sneak peek. I'll post more tomorrow. And I have a funny story, too. So stay tuned.

Oh, and doesn't the produce look amazing? Mmmm. I'm actually craving a salad right now. And I NEVER crave a salad at 10:30 at night. Chips or candy, sure. But, a salad, not a chance. Except for now. It must be the bag that makes the healthy stuff look so good.

I have to say that I think it's kind of funny that we call babies "yummy" or "delicious". I mean, really, it's kind of weird if you really think about it. But, this little guy was so darned adorable that I had to use that word. He is six months old... which is one of my favorite ages to photograph. Babies this age just laugh and smile. They are so interactive and make the best faces and the cutest expressions. And they don't crawl yet. So, when you put them down, they stay still. So check out this little sweetie and his killer blue eyes and his adorable bare naked baby bum.

A little late, but I wanted to show everyone the calendars that I'm offering this year. The beauty is that you can start it at any month you want. They measure 11x17, and each month features a different image. The cover is one whole 11x17 image. The quality on these is stunning. Really. The color is rich, the print is crisp, and the paper is nice and thick. It took me some time to find a company that delivered the quality that I wanted, and here it is. Call me for details. You can even have one made from last year's session. Wouldn't this be a great Valentine's day gift for Grandma, Grandpa, Daddy's office, or for yourself???

Oh, this is kind of fun. I mentioned that I tried several companies to find the best calendar. Well, I ordered from one company, and just didn't like the way it was printed, and the calendar printing wasn't very crisp, so I returned the calendar. Then about a month later, I get a call from them telling me that they liked my photography and wondered if they could use my returned calendar as a sample at an upcoming trade show. Turns out the trade show is PPA's (Professional Photographers of America) Imaging USA, which is one of the largest photography shows in the USA. So, even though I wasn't able to make it to the show, my work was on display there. Cool.

Cinderella in Real Life

There we are tonight, finishing up dinner. My daughter is being the best helper in the world, and is taking everyone's plates to the dishwasher. Plate after plate. Six of them. Silverware, too. And she's doing this with a smile on her face. Then, she asks my husband if there is anything else she can do. He jokes and says "my laundry". So, she takes his plate and puts it in the dishwasher and then runs off out of the kitchen. I figured that she was running to the bathroom. A minute later she shouts "Dad, what do I do with your laundry???" Of course, we bust out laughing. What a sweetie. It's the moments like these that make all those tantrums worthwhile.

Oh, and I had to take a super quick snapshot of my happy Cinderella who just happened to be wearing her Cinderella dress.

I spent some time today on my poor neglected blogger. Look up at the new rotating header. Ta da!!!! I guess I'm finally slowing down enough to get to those important, but not so urgent details. Now that I've figured this out... one part photographer... one part engineer, I can't wait to put together a few more images to rotate in and out. This is the fun stuff that I love doing when I'm not editing or spending time with my family. So, you can see why it doesn't often get done.

I am so excited to be participating in the National Charity Model Search to select “America’s Cutest Kid” and to raise funds for a charity that I've donated my time and talent to.

They're looking for cute children ages 18 months to 14 years old to model for a portrait to be entered into the contest.

Models Search Special:
$250 session fee, which includes a 45 minute model session at my studio, one image submitted to the national gallery, and a $200 print credit.

Finalists will be determined by online votes. Anyone may vote. Each vote is $1, and all proceeds from votes benefit the non-profit Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep. (NILMDTS.org)

Grand prize national winner will be determined from the 50 city finalists. Winners selected by photography and modeling industry experts.

If your child is selected the national winner, you’ll receive many prizes, including a $5,000 US Savings Bond and a Canon PowerShot G10 digital camera.

Battle of Wills

Since the day she was born, my daughter has been strong willed. I know it's a trait that will serve her well in adult life. In the meantime, it makes life interesting. A week ago, my parents came for dinner and stayed to play some cards. Of course, she had no interest in bedtime since grandma and grandpa were over. Every attempt to put her in bed was unsuccessful. Finally, after putting her to down several times, we decided to ignore the unacceptable behavior. It was late. She was tired. She knew it was bedtime. As we played our game in the kitchen, she stood at the top of the stairs whining about how she wasn't tired (long past her bedtime). We kept playing. Over a period of time, she slowly inched her way down the stairs until she finally gave up. We hoped she would give up and go to bed herself. No such luck. She gave up the fight most reluctantly as she literally fell asleep where she was. On a step. That couldn't have been comfortable. But, that's my strong willed girl. Parenting is so hard, especially when you don't know what is the best thing to do for the situation. We just know that once you pick your battle, you cannot lose. This was an especially tough one. And look how cute she is when she's asleep.

This is by no means a "sneak peak". I've been really bad at posting to my blog, as many of you know. But, I just had to share a few from this little cutie's one year session. He is so adorable, and I had so much fun during the session. I guess "better late than never" applies here. These were actually taken in November... thus the copyright 2008, and not 2009. Hopefully I'll get better at posting to my blog next year. I mean this year. :)

I hope that everyone had a very Merry Christmas!!! My ears are still ringing from the squeals of delight when the kids saw what Santa delivered. It was a Norman Rockwell moment as we were standing in the upstairs hallway and my daughter was shouting "He brought the whole thing! He brought the whole thing!", referring to the mega-pack of the Rose Petal Cottage, and not just the cottage itself. And as she absorbed the joy, the front door opened, we peeked through the railing to the front door, and my parents walked in with a joyous "Merry Christmases". We could not have been merrier.

It was wonderful to peel my fingers off my keyboard and my eyes away from my monitor this past week. And, while I have squeezed in a few sessions this coming week because of family being in town and kids home from college, etc, I just wanted to let everyone know that I'm prioritizing family first this week. I'll answer calls and emails, but I'm going to try to keep editing and non-urgent things to a minimum. I know it'll be hard. I love knocking things off my to-do list. But, this week, the content of my to-do list has shifted a bit. Number 1 is family (and some very neglected household tasks). I'm sure you all understand. So, thanks. And enjoy your families as well. They grow up so fast.
